Therapeutic Stretches

If you make the decision to undergo chiropractic care in an attempt to relieve back or neck pain, your initial visit to the practitioner will involve a chiropractic examination. During this exam you will need to be as accurate and honest as possible when describing your symptoms, personal medical history, and family medical history so that your chiropractor can design a unique treatment plan that is suited to your needs.

This plan will likely involve one-on-one sessions with your chiropractor, as well as to other lifestyle modifications that should become a normal part of your daily regimen, such as therapeutic stretches, therapeutic exercises, and diet counseling.

Types of Therapeutic Stretches
For some patients, therapeutic stretches are a good way to restore joint mobility and improve muscle strength. If your doctor prescribes stretching as part of your treatment regimen, the following are some simple exercises that might be part of your doctor’s recommendations (but remember to always get your doctor’s permission before trying any new stretching or exercise plan):

•    Knee-to-chest stretch – Lie on your back and bend one knee up toward your chest; wrap your hands around the shin of that leg and gently pull.

•    Leg raise stretch – Lie on your back with one leg bent and one leg straight; use your core muscles to lift the straight leg 45-90 degrees off the floor.

•    Prone stretch – Lie on your stomach with your arms bent and out to your sides; turn your head to one side and slowly lift the opposite leg about 15-30 degrees off the floor.

•    Neck resistance – This is an isometric stretch for the cervical (neck) region of the spine. Simply put a hand on your forehead and gently push against your head, using the muscles of the neck to resist the pressure.

Other Forms of Chiropractic Care
If you are suffering from degenerative spine conditions such as herniated disc, bulging disc, facet disease, or spinal stenosis, your chiropractor may also employ decompression techniques – a decompression table, traction, or chiropractic mobilization – to release stress on spinal nerves. However, keep in mind that chiropractic work is not the only form of treatment for spine pain. A regimen of pain medication, low-impact exercise, and behavior modification may be all you need to achieve relief.
