The most common purposes people seek the aid of a massage therapist is from musculoskeletal pain in the back and neck. Massage therapy is able to increase circulation to help both tissue and muscle repair and be healed, thereby relieving muscle spasms, tension and knots. This is accomplished by helping the lymphatic system remove waste from your body thereby reducing scars, inflammation, and internal injuries.
Massage therapy has many other benefits. Other reasons people seek out a massage therapist is to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and heart rate, treat depression, and to stimulate the immune system.
Globally, there are over thirty types of practiced massage therapy. The Bowen technique involves a rolling type movement over fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. It does not involve deep or prolonged contact with muscle tissues as in most kinds of massage, but relieves muscle tensions and strains and restores normal lymphatic flow.
Deep tissue massage uses techniques that are designed for more focused massage work. Working a specific joint, muscle or muscle group, I can access deeper layers of the soft tissue. Starting superficially and easing into the depth of the muscle slowly often allows more movement. Also, very little lubricant is used, as the pressure doesn't travel much over the skin. Alternatively, soft tissue massage includes trigger point therapy, e.g. sustained finger pressure.
Myofascial release is the manual massage technique for stretching fascia and releasing muscles, thus eliminating pain and to increase the range of motion. This is done by applying compression and tension in various directions as well as by skin rolling.
Stone massage uses either hot or cold smooth stones. When heated, these stones are used to relax muscles, thereby allowing me to work deeper into the muscle. Stones are heated in hot water. They are then placed on or under the back, along both sides of the spine, and on top of the torso.
