Muscle Relaxation vs. Muscle Facilitation

Kinesio Tape is used in sport and rehabilitation for muscle relaxation or muscle facilitation.

There are two directions one can apply the tape and the importance of choosing the correct direction is described as follows:

For muscles that are injured or overused, requiring muscle relaxation, relief and healing from pain and tightness, the tape is applied with no tension, starting from the tendons (end of muscle) that hold the muscle to the bone and extending toward the origin (beginning) of the muscle... insertion to origin. This creates the muscle to reduce in tension (relaxation) and used in treatments.

For chronically injured or weakened muscles, requiring muscle facilitation, support and full range of motion, the tape is applied with light tension, starting from the origin (beginning) of the muscle and extending toward the tendons (end) of muscle that hold the muscle to the bone... origin to insertion. This stimulates tired or underused muscles and mostly used in Rehabilitation.
